Title: Your swimming skills?
Post by: Kat on Feb 14, 2026, 09:37 AM
How good are your swimming skills?

I didn't learn how to swim until swim class in high school freshman year. A teacher taught me quickly and that's only because I was heavy and well, fat floats, so it wasn't too hard to learn how to maneuver my arms and legs from there.

We used to have an above ground pool and I used it a lot in the summer. I don't miss having one because the chlorine bothered me and the chemicals and upkeep was too costly.

I never learned to swim, unfortunately. I think that I could manage to stay above water for a short period of time, but that's about it.

Same, I had a traumatic experience as a kid and it turned me away from water and swimming for life.  Silly, because it's such an essential thing.

I almost drowned as a young kid so my brain goes into defensive mode at the pools :(

Yeah, that's similar for me.  Straight to panic mode anytime I'm near open water or pools.  Not pleasant.

The cure for that is to slowly introduce your brain/body to water so that your brain remembers the good moments instead of the bad ones. Then you can dip your foot in the water and relax.

J love going to the hydro pool. I can do that so long as I'm not in the deep end. It's nice and warm :)
